Thanks for the tutorial Robyn. Excellent info! I can't wait until the stream of January visitors leave so I can get back into my 440QE. I have a quilt pinned and ready to go!!

Just a follow-up: Any chance you might review the process (mostly the button settings on the machine) to remove the BSR and put the #1 foot back on. I am sure everyone else knows what to do, but all those settings, I'm pretty green. Does the machine reset once the BSR is unplugged and removed? Or do you need to reset stitch settings. I know the feed dog button will need to be pushed in to activate the feed dog. Just wondering about the LED screen settings and the running man etc. Thanks again.

Thank you Robyn. The photos are really helpful. I just purchased my 440QE and everything is new to learn. I took the demo on Sat. using the BSR and what a dream. The dealer offers owner classes and I am planning on attending, but this blog helps me acquaint things I might have missed reading. When I look at all the attachments and the buttons, I glaze over some. So thanks for the photos and instructions. Very helpful.

The Balance button's function was explained by my dealer as this: some fabrics will stretch out or compress a decorative stitch e.g. the honeycomb stitch on some stretchy fabrics could be stretched out. The balance button is then set to counteract this so that the stitch pattern looks normal. Of course, it can be used for decorative effects as well. Experiment on a stable fabric with the button and settings and the different stitch patterns to see what it looks like - such fun playing like this! This machine opens up a whole new world of creative expression...!

I know what the BSR/balance button does when you are not in BSR/free motion stitching. It stretches out decorative stitch patterns. If you press the balance button and then the needle position button you can stretch out any decorative stitch pattern, the stitch length or density will not change but the patterns will. For example #92 which is alternating squares will become alternating rectangles. Not all patterns look good with this, but a lot will. You have available adjustments from 1 to 9. I suggest you experiment. What it does is give you nine variations on all decorative or utilitarian stitches. This can prove kind of fun if you want to experiment with thread painting, or a feed dogs up machine quilting.
