Update: Bernina 440 QE machine cover

Thank you all for your great suggestions on what to do with that AB green lotus fabric.  You have given me much inspiration for the next time that I venture to take it out of my stash!  I believe it may be destined for either a throw/lumbar pillow, or for a quilt of some kind.

Many of you asked about dimensions of the Bernina sewing machine cover that I made so that you could make your own.  Here you go!  These are approximate:

6 1/4″ D x 17 1/2″ W x 13″ H.

It could be a little bit shorter – there’s a teeny bit of extra bulk at the bottom that I might eliminate if I were to make another one…

Here’s how I pack everything up underneath: I stash the foot pedal, with the cord coiled, inside of the space between the needle and body, I put the accessory cabinet onto the back, and I lean the plastic tray against the front.  All of this fits nicely underneath for a perfect Bernina package of joy!

Above is a picture of the configuration –  a delicious Bernina sandwich!  Have fun making your own cover.  If you do, I’d love to see what you come up with!  Feel free to post a link in the comments.

    Hi Amy,

So sorry about that! The link to part 1 of this post is here:

I don’t have a tutorial on how to make the cover, so much as just the dimensions posted here. To do it, you’d need:

    External:
    1 piece – 18″ x 6 3/4″ (this is the top)
    2 pieces – 6 3/4″ x 13 1/2″ (sides)
2 pieces – 18″ x 13 1/2″ (front and back – this could be patchwork or anything else that results in this size)

    Lining:
Same pieces as above, in lining fabric

    Interfacing or batting:
    Same pieces as above

Bias tape – enough to get all around the bottom edge (don’t know exactly how much – 1 package should suffice!)

Construct a box out of the lining first and another box out of the external pieces, then another separate box with the batting, sandwich them together and bind with bias tape. Mine is pretty crude and was a quickie with no hand sewing. Good luck!

You are a gem! Believe it or not….I had no idea what that funny looking plastic thing was for. Thanks for posting a pic of your machine….I now know it’s for holding the plastic tray in place. I wonder what else you are going to teach me?! Boy am I happy to have found your blog!!!

You are a life saver, thanks for your blog. I bought my 440QE on vacation in another state and if it wasn’t for your blog using the BSR I would still be confused.
    I totally appreciate your generosity.

Hi, I’m attempting to make one of these for my mom. I know she has this machine, but it fits in a special table so only from the stitch plate up will need to fit under the cover. I don’t live by her to go measure her machine. Could please give me a height from just the stitch plate up so I don’t make the cover way too tall? 🙂 Thank you!!

  12. robyn Says:

Hi Michelle! It’s 8.25″ tall from the stitch plate. Happy sewing!

  13. Bev Says:

Being new to using my 440 Aurora Quilting machine I would like to know if the 100% cotton thread used for quilting should be used in both the upper part of the machine and the bobbin? Seems I saw something that said the top of the machine should be quilting thread and the lower should be a regular sewing thread.
I have a 70″ table runner and not sure what to use. The fabric has black detail so decided to use black buttons on the end embellishment & would it look right to also quilt with the black quilting thread. The runner is deep reds, tans & ivory. The ends are finished with a 2 1/2″ band, topped with little triangle tabs with buttons on top of the band.
Thank you for the great tutorials of how-too’s on the BS& Walking Foot. There were no instructions for either of these attachments.
    So appreciative,
    Bev
